Plant of the Week – Dogwood ‘Cherokee Brave’

One of the showiest flowers on any tree, the dogwood blooms in spring and will be a welcome sight after a long cold winter like this one.  This particular dogwood cultivar is pink, but white and other shades of pink are available.

Dogwoods should be planted in full sun to get the best bloom in the spring, and color in the fall.  They prefer a rich soil, but will not tolerate wet soils, which will often lead to anthracnose disease.  Dogwoods will reach 15-30’ in height, and 25-35’ wide.

If anthracnose is a concern, kousa dogwood can be planted as a substitute, and is considered tolerant of this disease.
