Step-by-Step Guide to Planting Spring Bulbs In the Fall

Planting spring-flowering bulbs is a great way to add a splash of color to your garden when the weather starts warming up in the spring. These Bulbs are easy and inexpensive to plant, and can provide long-lasting beauty for many years. Try adding them to your perennial beds to give your garden an extra boost of color and create fuller beds or create a focal point in your garden with clusters.

When Should You Plant Your Spring-Flowering Bulbs?

Plan ahead because spring-flowering bulbs should be planted the previous fall. This gives them plenty of time to root and get settled in before the weather starts to warm up in the spring. You can plant these ‘bulbs’ once harvests are finished, while you are preparing for winter and up until the first hard frost. Late September, early October is a good window to plant spring-flowering bulbs.

How Should You Prepare The Soil?

Before you can plant your bulbs, you should prepare the soil. First, remove any weeds and rocks from the area. Then, loosen the soil and add a layer of organic matter. This will help keep the soil moist and provide nutrients for the bulbs. You can also add fertilizer and a critter control amendment to the soil at this time, please read amendment instructions well.

How Should You Plant Your Spring-Flowering Bulbs?

When planting your bulbs, the most important thing to remember is to make sure the roots are facing down and covered with soil. Check the instructions on the package for planting depth. Aim to plant bulbs in groups, as this will create a more dramatic effect when they bloom.

If you don’t have instructions, make sure to dig a hole that is almost 3X as deep as the height of the bulb. After you have planted your bulbs, fill in the hole with soil and lightly pat it down to ensure good contact between the bulb and the soil. Water your bulbs generously to ensure you are giving them enough moisture for roots to start growing and sprouting leaves.

Where Should You Plant Your Spring-Flowering Bulbs?

When you are deciding where to plant your spring bulbs, consider the amount of sunlight they will receive and choose an area that is well-draining. Most spring bulbs prefer full sun or partial shade. You should also avoid areas that have standing water, as this can cause the bulbs to rot.

It’s also worth noting that spring bulbs do very well in containers, so if you don’t have much space in your garden, this is a great option. Even if you have plenty of space in your garden, having a few containers of spring bulbs can provide a bright and welcoming touch to your home.
