Plant of the Week – Miscanthus

Miscanthus sinensis

Miscanthus is an ornamental grass that you probably see a lot here in the Ann Arbor area, and right now it is still in bloom.  There are several cultivars of Miscanthus available.  Most of them range from 6-8′ tall and wide, although there are several dwarf cultivars available as well, some that only reach 3′.

The grass can be left uncut for winter interest and cut back in early spring.  These grasses should be divided every 4-5 years as needed if they are declining. (If they fail to stand upright, or are hollowing out in the center.)
